The genus, Ilex, includes species of trees, shrubs and climbers with evergreen or deciduous foliage and inconspicuous flowers. The berries are an important food source for birds and, in winter, their spiny leaves make them an ideal home for shelter. Their impenetrability also makes them wonderful hedges as they can be shaped beautifully.
